Trip Protection Coverage in 2022

Some basics about travel insurance in these times
There is a lot of information here. We want you to be informed.
  • Trip Protection Coverage: These plans provide Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, and Trip Delay coverage if you are prevented from taking your trip due to a covered reason; most notably - illness, injury, or death to the traveler, a traveling companion, and/or an immediate family member not traveling, unforecasted inclement weather, and much more (please visit our Safe Travels Journey & Voyager plan comparison in our Help Center for more details).
  • Some COVID-19 Coverage Notes: *These plans treat COVID-19 the same as any other illness for any illness related losses while you are insured.
    • COVID-19 MEDICAL EXPENSES are covered and treated the same as any other illness.
    • COVID-19 Coverage can provide Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for unused, nonrefundable insured trip cost if you are prevented from taking your trip IF you become ill with COVID-19 before your trip is to start and you provide the appropriate documentation to support that you cannot travel; or you arrive and are unable to continue your trip due to your illness.
    • COVID-19 is considered a "known event". Any trip cancellation or trip interruption claims related to travel restrictions (including vaccine mandates) or fear of travel due to COVID-19 will not be payable.
  • Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) upgrade option can be added to the Safe Travels Voyager plan. CFAR provides reimbursement for 75% percent of the prepaid, nonrefundable, forfeited payments you paid for your trip, if you cancel your trip for any reason not otherwise covered by this policy.

Why should I buy travel insurance?

One thing that's certain is the unpredictability of travel for you or even a non-traveling family member. From sickness to hurricane evacuations, or injury while traveling, our travel insurance protects you - and your trip investment - even before you leave.
The travel retailer/planner who is organizing your experience may require you to purchase and maintain a qualified travel insurance policy for the duration of your trip.

Americans are beginning to travel abroad again for leisure, business, study abroad and missionary work. Given recent epidemics, natural disasters, and security threats in countries all around the globe - coupled with common medical issues - travelers have plenty of reasons to make sure their health and safety are fully insured prior to trip departure.

When should I buy travel insurance?

The sooner you purchase a trip protection style travel insurance plan, the more it will cover. It is generally recommended to purchase a trip protection style travel insurance plan within the first 10 or 21 days of making your initial trip payment of any kind for the trip. This is because many trip insurance plans have included benefits and/or upgrade options (ie coverage for pre-existing conditions, Cancellation for Any Reason upgrade). Plus, the trip payments you have already made are not covered until you purchase a trip protection style travel insurance policy.

  • If you have not yet departed from home, this type of situation would apply to the Trip Cancellation benefit in these plans.
  • If you have already begun your travels, this situation would apply to the Trip Interruption benefit in these plans.

When a country moves to a Level 4 Travel Advisory from the US Dept of State and/or the CDC, if this a covered reason for a Trip Cancellation claim?

Trip cancellation benefits are given if a covered reason is the cause of the cancellation. A Travel advisory from the State Department or other government bodies and border closings are not covered reasons on our plans.

Additionally, as it has been stated transparently to all customers since early on in the pandemic - in the FAQ, Help Center, and in the quoting & purchasing pathway, for which all customers must click "I Understand" prior to seeing the quotes...Since late January 2020 COVID-19 has been considered a "known event". For policies with trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits that were purchased since that date, any trip cancellation or trip interruption claims related to travel restrictions (including vaccine mandates) or fear of travel due to COVID-19 will not be payable. At this point, there is an assumed risk that the traveler is taking.

What are examples of travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic?

Examples of travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic are: vaccine mandates, border closures, travel bans, common carrier (ie airline) worker shortages.

There is conflict in Eastern Europe. Is this listed as a covered reason for Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption?

Any Loss caused by or resulting from War or any act of war whether declared or not, is excluded in this policy.

A Terrorist Incident may be covered. Click on the following links to refer to your state-specific policy certificate for details.

Will these plans include coverage for Trip Cancellation due to a vaccine mandate?

COVID-19 is considered a "known event". Any trip cancellation or trip interruption claims related to travel restrictions (including vaccine mandates) or fear of travel due to COVID-19 will not be payable.

*Unless you purchase the Cancellation for Any Reason (CFAR) upgrade option and you meet all of the eligibility requirements upon filing a claim.

How do I calculate my total trip costs for the travel insurance quote?

Trip Cost per person is a determining factor in the price of the insurance coverage, as well as the amount of trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage. Calculating the accurate insurable trip cost can seem confusing, but it doesn't have to be. You can include...
  • any non-refundable trip costs that you would lose should you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason prior to your trip departure, or should you need to interrupt your trip due to a covered reason during your trip.
  • payments already made for flights, cruises, hotels, tours, and related excursions.
  • payments still needed to be made (ie. balances on flights, hotels, tours, excursions that are scheduled and confirmed, but aren't finalized until your arrival).

***If you are purchasing the Safe Travels Voyager plan with the upgrade to Cancellation for Any Reason (CFAR), there are eligibility requirements for CFAR related to the insured trip cost. Specifically, "You insure all prepaid Trip costs that are subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions," and "You insure within fifteen (15) days of the payment for those arrangements, the cost of any subsequent arrangements (or any other arrangements not made through your travel agent) added before your trip."

Do I need to insure my total trip costs?

*Insuring your total nonrefundable trip cost will leave you more adequately and appropriately insured.

If you plan to purchase the Cancellation for Any Reason (CFAR) upgrade benefit option then you must insure all prepaid Trip costs that are subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions. This means all nonrefundable trip costs that you plan to pay for prior to your departure for this trip.

If you do not plan to purchase the CFAR upgrade benefit option then you can list an insured trip cost of your preference. However, note that the Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption benefits will be limited by the trip cost amount you wish to insure.

Do the trip protection plans cover Medical expenses due to COVID-19?

Sickness Medical Coverage - The plan will also pay you to be medically treated on your trip if you become infected with COVID-19 and need treatment after your travel has started.
  • The Safe Travels Journey plan includes up to $150,000 in SECONDARY emergency medical coverage.
  • The Safe Travels Voyager plan includes up to $250,000 in PRIMARY emergency medical coverage.
*Coronavirus/COVID-19 will be treated the same as any other sickness for any sickness related losses while you are insured.

*The terms primary and secondary generally relate to coverage for travel medical claims and baggage & personal effects claims.
  • If your travel insurance plan is secondary coverage, when you submit a claim for travel medical expenses, you would first make a claim on your primary health insurance coverage and then settle the balance of the claim with your travel insurance carrier and claims examiner. If your travel insurance plan is primary coverage, you can work directly with your travel insurance carrier and claims examiner for the entirety of your claim.
  • If you’re submitting a claim for coverage for baggage & personal effects, you’ll initially work with the airline and then file a claim for the balance with your travel insurance carrier and claims examiner.

Do the trip protection plans cover Trip Cancellation due to COVID-19?

For the Safe Travels Journey and Safe Travels Voyager trip protection plans...
  • COVID-19 MEDICAL EXPENSES are covered and treated the same as any other sickness.
  • COVID-19 Coverage provides Trip Cancellation reimbursement for unused, nonrefundable insured trip cost if you are prevented from taking your trip IF you or your traveling companion become sick with COVID-19 before your trip is to start and a doctor states you cannot travel. *The timing of your travel protection plan purchase in relation to your diagnosis and trip date could impact your coverage.
  • COVID-19 is considered a "known event". Any trip cancellation or trip interruption claims related to travel restrictions or fear of travel due to COVID-19 will not be payable.
*With concerns of future pandemics, some of the plans for US Citizens and US Residents cover you should the US Government issue a level 4 travel advisory, advising you not to travel to your destination country or region. This gives you an added level of coverage to seek reimbursement for your non-refundable insured trip costs.

Do the trip protection plans cover Trip Interruption due to COVID-19?

Trip Interruption provides reimbursement for unused, non-refundable insured trip costs if the trip is interrupted due to your becoming sick with COVID-19 while on your trip.

The travel supplier has canceled my trip. Can I get a refund of the insurance policy premium?

The Underwriter is no longer accepting cancellations and refunds beyond the 10-day free look period from the date of the initial purchase of the policy. All premium paid is non-refundable outside of the free look period. Trip dates may be transferred provided that they are within the purchase limitations.

*We are working to offer alternate solutions for times of extenuating circumstances.

For cancel requests within the 10-day review/"free look" period (30-day review/"free look" for residents of Indiana), once verified, the policy would be voided, and a credit issued to the card used to make the purchase. CLICK HERE to submit a cancel request within the free look period. *If you submit this request beyond the review/"free look" for your resident state, your refund request will not be approved by the insurance company.

Is the cancellation of the event by the travel retailer a covered reason to file a claim for trip cancellation on my insurance policy?

There are MANY covered reasons for TripCancellation in these plans. However, if the travel retailer has canceled the event and your package, it is not a covered reason for a Trip Cancellation claim.

If the travel retailer is refunding the payments you made for your package, you would not be able to claim those funds anyway, as they are not forfeited funds.

You can access your policy certificates through the "Certificate" button next to your name listed in your travel insurance confirmation email, which was sent to you by our plan administrator - enrollments@trawickinternational.

Click on the following links to access the state-specific sample policy certificates.

The list of covered reasons for the Trip Cancellation benefit begins somewhere between Pg 11-13, depending on your state of residence.

Many airlines are being very flexible with issuing credits for future travel, and in some cases, refunds. We encourage you to check with your airline.

Won't the credit card that I use pay for the trip or the travel supplier reimburse me, if something goes wrong?

Not all credit cards include coverage trip cancellation or trip interruption. Even some that do require you to buy-in to it. Credit card coverage often isn't as comprehensive as retail travel insurance plans are for benefits such as trip cancellation, trip interruption, travel medical expenses, and emergency medical transportation. Plus, the credit card coverage typically doesn't include coverage for pre-existing conditions or if the travel supplier falls into bankruptcy or financial default.

Check to see if your credit card is this comprehensive. If so, you may just feel comfortable supplementing that coverage with a travel medical-only plan.

What if my flight is delayed or canceled by the airline due to COVID-19?

On Trip cancellation plans, if your flight is delayed or canceled, Trip Interruption, Missed Connection and Travel Delay benefits may be available. Please check your specific plan for terms and conditions or contact the claims department listed on your ID Card. Time restrictions may apply. Also, please check with your travel provider to determine your options.

If the airline cancels flights due to a worker strike or an inclement weather event, this could considered be a covered reason for Trip Cancellation.

Flight cancellations due to other reasons may be covered. Please check the plan document for more details.
